Warner Hewett (the Younger) was the son of the steward at the Norman ducal palace at the coastal city of Fecamp in Normandy (at his birth, the King of England was also the Duke of Normandy). As a youth of 16, Warner had been trained to assist his father but was tempted to join the military by one of the young nobles of the palace. While contemplating his career path, Warner found himself in the old ruins inland. He a young women walking through the ruins. She was very pale and had light golden hair. She wore a worn noble dress of an older style, and was barefooted. He called her Ash, because that was as close to her name as he could get. Ash told Warner she lived there, and he was always unclear what she meant by that. However, Warner began to come out to the ruins more often, and small talk graduated to more intimate encounters. During this period of time, Warner decided that being in the military was more heroic. He had less time to spend with Ash, but would still go to the ruins when time allowed. A few months after the first meeting Warner went out to the ruins, and found Ash trying to shelter herself among the ruins, as she was unwell and clearly dying. However, the strong bawling from the bundle was full of life. Ash handed the baby to Warner, telling him that this was his daughter, and that he must take care of her. Warner took up the small bundle was caught in a trance by his daughter’s blue eyes. When a few moments later, he looked back to see how Ash was doing, but she was gone. Strangely, her dress still remained. He never saw her again.

The Hewett men raised young Jocelyn in her early years. Warner the younger joined the ill fated Fourth Crusade in 1201 along with one of the young lords of the palace (both were hoping to gain some fame and prestige). Warner the younger died in July of 1203 during the siege of Constantinople. The year 1204 left Warner the elder in a bit of trouble. It was obvious to him that the ducal palace was going to switch hands from the English to the French, and his job and head were at stake. Fortunately for young Jocelyn, Pratus Viridis, a magus at the summer covenant of Objurgator (near the French Alps) was in the area and took note of the small girl. Warner agreed to let Pratus to bring Jocelyn to Objurgator as his future apprentice. Warner joined the Objurgator household too (magi always need a little household organization), but passed away from a serious illness only a couple months after Jocelyn became Pratus’ apprentice (at the young age of 8).
